What is epoxy coating?

How the Epoxy Pipe Repair Process Works

The epoxy pipe coating/pipelining process is a cost-effective alternative to replacing or repairing your old piping. The technique helps create a new protective barrier coating inside the current, damaged pipe. Most modern plumbing systems are considered a good candidate for epoxy pipe coatings.

Want to know what goes into an entire epoxy pipe repair process? Here are the 4 basic stages of the coating/lining process: 

  • Step 1: Evaluation. Your water pipes will be inspected and evaluated to determine the extent of the damage. This step is done using a pressure test or possibly, electronic leak location equipment.
  • Step 2: Preparation. Before the epoxy coating is applied, the water is drained from the potable plumbing lines that will be receiving the epoxy coating or lining. The piping system is dried with heated air, which loosens debris, corrosion, and makes it easier to clean. The pipes are then cleaned to remove all build-up and corrosion and the length of the coating needed is determined.
  • Step 3: Implementation. After the prep work is complete, the epoxy coating is blown in place using pressurized air. The pipe will then have a protective barrier coating of epoxy resin, which is allowed to cure fully. The curing process usually takes less than a couple of hours.
  • Step 4: Re-evaluation. After the epoxy coating is fully cured, an additional pressure test is done. It is conducted to ensure the piping system is properly coated and holding pressure to have the water turned back on. Once this is verified, the plumbing pipes are returned to active service.

While each job is unique, these are the general steps to ensure your pipes are restored and that the epoxy coating/epoxy lining successfully fixes the issues.
